NYCWP and Global Kids Spring 2010 Workshops

We have the following Thursdays scheduled.

March 24

Here is a PDF of the presentation that Global Kids gave during this meeting.

And a word version of the Games Based Learning Resource List.

Add questions and reflections here:

Paul writes (4/11):
I'm curious about how you are using Evoke at this point in your classes. We have stayed with it, and we are having a small, but growing number of students get engaged. Six or so regularly appear at various points of the leader cloud. Having the goal of getting 100 points has been very useful. Also, there seems like a useful integration of the "Issues Based Games" and the missions (e.g. The McDonald's Game with the Food Security mission...) I'm going to list these suggestions out if I have time tonight.

Susan writes (4/12):
We developed a set of questions that we are applying to each game. We have found that 4 of them are blocked by the filter and we have written to ask to have them unblocked. Here is the link to the shared document where we are all entering our reactions.

Reflections on Evoke after a few weeks

<A few/Several> weeks ago, I became an agent <highlight "agent" then add a link to your Evoke profile. It should look something like this: http://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/UserName> on in a global network of social innovators. Urgent EVOKE: A Crash Course in Saving the World opened on March 3, 2010. It’s a <_____>, a <_____>, a <_____>, and a <_____> all in one. It was designed and is directed by <_____________> for the World Bank Institute.

<Title of this section>
EVOKE has been open <add a number> weeks and already has more than <Find out how many on the agents page> members. The game will last <__________>, concluding on <Month Day, Year>, with a new quest and a new mission unlocked each week. In the first mission agents were asked to <describe the story and the Imagine 1 prompt in 2 or three sentences.>

The first thing I looked at was this 90-second trailer: EVOKE trailer <highlight "EVOKE trailer" and add this URL as a link http://vimeo.com/9094186 or embed the video here.> from Alchemy on Vimeo. I thought the trailer was <Find your What's up? about the trailer and put it here, then make corrections.>

I <like / don't like > the way the story is presented, because... <Describe graphic novel> <Add your What's Up's from each of the three episodes here. Write transitions and make corrections.>

<Title for this section>
Each week, <Describe what players are asked to do each week.> My favorite quest so far was the <first, second, or third> one. This quest was <________>, because.... On the surface, this quest was to <say what the questions were.>

Each week's mission has three parts: <______, ___, and _______), and so far I'm enjoying the <_______> ones the most because... <say why you like these prompts the most.> My best mission so far has been the <first, second, or third> week, the one about <say what this mission is about. What's the theme or goal of this mission?>

The "learn" part of this mission was to <In 2 or 3 sentences, summarize what you were asked to do.> As you can see in my blog post <Highlight "blog post" and add a link to that post> for this part of the mission, I learned <explain what you learned in this part of your mission.>

The “act” part was to <In two or three more sentences, summarize what you task was for this part of your favorite mission.> Again, please take a look at my blog post <Highlight "blog post" and add a link to this specific post>. For this challenge I <Either describe what you did or what you plan to do.>

For “imagine” we were asked to <Explain the assignment for this mission.> Now take a look at my <story, video, images> for this task.> What I like most about what I put up was <Describe a specific part of your writing, video, or image.> This made me think about... <Add a couple of sentences.>

<Title for this section>
When I first started playing Evoke, I thought... <describe what you were thinking or feeling as you started.> Now, I'm wondering <What are you questions or thoughts about the game now?> The most interesting part of the game is <What do you like best?>

Some have even wondered if Evoke is a game. I think <explain some things that are like other games you have played and some things that are NOT like other games you have played.> We watched a TED video in which <______ ____________> <highlight the speaker's name, and add this link:
http://www.ted.com/talk/jane_mcgonigal_gaming_can_make_a_better_world.ht... or embed the video here.> explains these types of games, and I'm thinking now that... <copy your What's Up" about the TED video here.>

I <am / am not> looking forward to the next episodes of Evoke, because... <finish this with 3 or 4 more sentences showing what your are (or are not) looking forward to and why.>
